MANGO (from Tamil மாங்காய்/ Maangai)
The mango is a member of the Anachardiaceae family which includes cashews and pistachio. It is reputedly the most widely consumed fresh fruit in the world. It is the national fruit of India, Pakistan and the Philippines, also the national tree of Bangladesh.
It has been discovered that mangoes originated in northeast India, Myanmar and Bangladesh after fossil records were found there dating back 25 to 30 million years. Buddhist monks took mango plants on voyages to Malaya and eastern Asia in the 4th and 5th centuries BC. Therein after, it spread along trading routes across the world, popular for it's sweet taste.
Fresh mango pulp is high in fibre, vitamins A and C, vitamin B6 and other essential nutrients such as potassium, copper and amino acids.

With a smooth texture, it can be eaten by the spoonful as a puree. It also can be enjoyed in a wrap with goats cheese or as a healthy dip or as an alternative to mango chutney. It goes surprisingly well with roast chicken or to make a sauce to pair with beef or pork.
